This is the gay-vs-straight view the world map couldn’t show: in Europe, ECDC records how each new HIV diagnosis was acquired. Each value is the number of confirmed new HIV diagnoses a country reported that year for the selected route: sex between men (gay & other men who have sex with men — bisexual men are counted here too), heterosexual contact, injecting drug use, mother-to-child, and unknown / not reported (a large share in several countries, because the route often isn’t ascertained). These are counts, not rates, so more populous countries naturally show bigger numbers, and earlier years / some countries report less completely. Scope: EU/EEA reporting countries. Each route has its own colour scale; pick one from the dropdown and drag the year slider or press play.
